Oxygen Affinity of Hemoglobin and Red Cell Acid Base Status

چکیده

This volume is the publication of the proceedings of the symposium held in May of 1971. Most of the chapters are relatively brief contributions, often by major authorities. The topics discussed include the interaction between hemoglobin and oxygen, carbon dioxide, the red cell membrane, carbonic anhydrase, the regulation of intermediary metabolism of the red cell and of the oxygen affinity of hemoglobin. A number of the articles are rather specialized research reports that will be of principal value for other workers directly in the field. There are, however, some brief and lucid summaries of the status of these fields. For example, the discussion by Gibson of the controversy about the role of dimers of hemoglobin chains in cooperative heme interactions is an excellent introduction to the status of controversies as of May, 1971, for those not working directly in the field. Nevertheless, someone seriously interested in learning this subject in its current status would wish to go to the more recent publications by Perutz and his collaborators. Overall, this volume is not very well suited for use by students. It is, however, a valuable reference source and belongs in medical school and university libraries. Researchers directly concerned with the chemistry of the red cell will find many points of value in this volume.

Hemoglobin affinity for oxygen in chronic renal disease: the effect of hemodialysis.

The affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen may increase significantly in subjects who are hypophosphatemic and alkalotic. We studied the organic phosphate content and oxygen binding by hemoglobin of red cells in subjects undergoing hemodialysis, during which time d decrease in plasma inorganic phosphate and an increase in blood pH may occur. Red cell 2,3-DPG was not correlated with plasma inorganic ...

Effect of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate on oxygen affinity of blood in sickle cell anemia.

Blood of patients with sickle cell anemia (SS) exhibits decreased affinity for oxygen, although the oxygen affinity of hemoglobin S is the same as that of hemoglobin A. SS red cells contain more 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (DPG) than normal erythrocytes. The oxygen affinity of hemolyzed red cells is decreased by added DPG, and hemolysates prepared from SS red cells do not differ from normal hemolysa...

This paper described the curtailment of red-cell glycolysis, decreased red-cell organic phosphates. and increased hemoglobin-oxygen affinity that resulted from severe hypophosphatemia, which occurred during the use of parenteral nutrition The observations suggested that decreased concentrations of red-cell 2,3.diphosphoglycerate impaired red-cell function and that decreased red. cell adenosine ...

Comparative study of some blood respiratory factors between mudskipper, Scartelaos tenuis and mullet, Liza klunzingeri in the Persian Gulf, Hormozgan province

Fish depend on water to supply oxygen demand. Blood plays an important role in oxygen transport. Differences in oxygen uptake, resulting in special blood respiratory factors are arisen from diverse living styles. In this study, blood respiratory factors compared between mudskipper, Scartelaos tenuis, and Liza klunzingeri. Samples were taken from Bandar abbas shore line. Blood sampling was perfo...

Regulatory mechanisms of hemoglobin oxygen affinity in acidosis and alkalosis.

The recent reports of the effect of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) on hemoglobin affinity for oxygen suggested that this substance may play a role in man's adaptation to acidosis and alkalosis.A study of the effect of induced acidosis and alkalosis on the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve of normal man was therefore carried out, and the mechanisms involved in the physiological regulation of he...
